The Basics of Neuropsychological Assessment, presented by Dr. Karri Lusk

This presentation provides an overview of neuropsychological testing in the evaluation of dementia and cognitive decline. Participants will learn the primary purpose of neuropsychological assessment, common reasons for referral, and the major cognitive domains typically evaluated, including memory, attention, language, executive functioning, visuospatial skills, and emotional functioning. The workshop will also review how neuropsychological findings are integrated with medical history, neuroimaging, functional abilities, and collateral information to assist with differential diagnosis, treatment planning, safety recommendations, and care coordination. In addition, important factors that can influence test performance, such as mood, sleep, pain, education, cultural background, and medication effects, will be briefly discussed.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the primary purpose of neuropsychological testing in the evaluation of suspected dementia and cognitive decline.

  • Describe several common cognitive domains assessed during dementia-focused neuropsychological evaluations and how results may assist with diagnosis and treatment planning.
